Axel tore the envelope open and removed a folded sheet of paper. It started, “Dear Maureen.” When he scanned to the bottom of the letter, it said “Love, Cassie.”

“It’s from my mother to her sister,” he said. “I’ll read it aloud.”

“If you want to keep it private,” Morgana said.

“No, I have nothing to hide from you.” Then he read.

Dear Maureen,

I saw them again today, sniffing around the house. I hate not trusting our own kind, but what can I do? Our family history has seen too many tragedies to put Axel at risk too. I know I should send him away, find him a nice family to live with that doesn’t have any of this baggage, but I can’t. I love him too much, and when he has questions about who we are, I want to be the one to answer them. Is it selfish?
